A Warning Light in Your Hired Prado: What to Do Next
If a warning appears while you're driving a hired Prado, keep control of the vehicle, follow any instruction to stop and find a safe place to assess the message. Contact the rental provider before continuing with an unresolved warning. The light's colour or shape alone isn't enough to diagnose it.
Stop safely as a priority if you see a serious warning or overheating indication, notice smoke, or experience unusual braking or steering. Don't let an arrival time decide whether you continue.
Get to a safe stopping position
Keep your attention on the road instead of staring at the dashboard or reaching for a phone. A passenger can read the displayed message aloud while you concentrate on stopping safely as soon as circumstances allow.
Once stopped, secure the vehicle according to its manual and check the surroundings. A roadside shoulder, wildlife area and busy urban street each present different hazards. Stay out of traffic and don't leave the car in an unsafe location just to take a better photograph.
If there's smoke, fire or another immediate danger, prioritise people and contact emergency help. Follow instructions from responsible local officials or emergency responders where available, as well as those from the rental provider.
Identify the exact warning
The symbol needs to be read with the correct manual and any accompanying message. A stranger online can't establish that the car is safe to drive from a description of a light alone.
Toyota's warning-light instructions for the 2026 US Land Cruiser include some warnings that require an immediate safe stop and others that need prompt inspection. The response depends on the warning. Use that as a reason to consult the right manual, without assuming the US model's symbols and equipment match every Prado.
Record the words on the display, whether the light is steady or flashing and what happened just before it appeared. These details tell the provider much more than “a yellow light.” If you can't interpret it, take a clear photograph while safely stationary and send it to them.
Report what you can safely observe
The rental team needs enough information to advise you without asking you to keep testing the vehicle. Include:
- Your location, direction of travel and a safe landmark or map pin
- The vehicle or booking reference
- The exact warning message and a dashboard photograph
- Whether the light is steady, flashing or accompanied by a sound
- Changes in steering, braking, temperature or other vehicle behaviour
- Whether you've stopped safely and whether anyone needs urgent help
Don't crawl under the car, touch hot components or carry out a roadside mechanical inspection to fill in the report. Only include observations you can make safely.
With poor connectivity, preserve your battery and use the contact options agreed at collection. Pass on your location when a connection becomes available. Report the warning even if it disappears before you send the message.
Leave diagnosis and repair to the appropriate people
Don't repeatedly restart the vehicle to see if the light clears, disconnect the battery or reset warnings. Avoid repairs suggested for another model, and don't open a hot cooling system or add fluids without appropriate instructions.
Tell the provider if the car still seems to drive normally, but don't take that as clearance to continue. Important faults aren't always obvious from the driver's seat.
Ask what happens next and follow the vehicle's safety instructions. If advice is unclear or conflicts with a displayed instruction to stop, get clarification before treating it as permission to drive.
EliteMotion's rental terms require prompt reporting of problems. Keep a record of the advice and the time of the call so the next person helping has the same information.
Arrange the rest of the journey
Once everyone is safe and you've reported the problem, ask whether to remain at the current safe location, who is coordinating assistance and what other information they need.
Wait for the provider to confirm any replacement car or rescue time before promising one to your group. You could say: “We have stopped safely, the issue is reported, and we are waiting for the agreed next step.”
If a lodge arrival, collection or onward journey is affected, a passenger can update the relevant contact. Keep that message factual and leave out any mechanical diagnosis that hasn't been established.
Save the support details at handover
Before the trip, ask the provider to explain the normal dashboard display and show you where to find the correct manual. Save the booking and support details offline, including the preferred way to report an urgent vehicle issue.
Check EliteMotion's published details on the contact page, then confirm the operational contact for your booking. Read the insurance exclusions before departure so you know what to check rather than assuming every incident is covered.
