Prado Facelift or New Generation? How to Read a Rental Listing

A Prado facelift updates a model within its generation. A new generation is a broader replacement, while registration year is a separate detail. If a rental listing uses these terms loosely, ask what each one says about the car on offer.

You only need enough information to understand the description and check the details that matter to your booking. A few questions about the model and dates can save confusion at collection.

What does the listing mean by generation, facelift and year?

The generation identifies the model family. J150 and 250 are distinct generations in the Prado or light-duty Land Cruiser line.

A facelift describes a styling or equipment update within a generation. The word alone won't give you the full specification or tell you the vehicle's condition.

A year needs more explanation. It might mean manufacture year, model year, first registration or a later local registration. Those dates aren't interchangeable, so ask which one the listing uses.

“J150 facelift” and “250” therefore describe different things, even when both cars look relatively recent in photographs. Any year shown beside those names still needs to be defined.

Check the broad timeline

Toyota's Prado history dates the 150-series launch to September 2009. Toyota unveiled the Land Cruiser 250 in August 2023, then launched it in Japan in April 2024.

These dates help distinguish the generations. They don't establish when an individual car was manufactured, arrived in Kenya or received particular equipment.

If a listing seems inconsistent, ask the provider to explain it: “Does the year in this listing refer to the car's original manufacture or its registration?” One photograph isn't enough to conclude that the description is wrong or to accuse anyone of misrepresenting a vehicle.

An example advert to clarify

Take this entirely hypothetical listing: “Prado facelift, 2021, seven seats.” You would need to check at least three claims separately: the generation, what “2021” means and whether the allocated car has the seating configuration you need.

A follow-up could read: “Please confirm the generation and manufacture/model year, explain the year shown in the advert, and confirm that the photographs show the proposed vehicle.”

For a category booking, ask when the details of the individual car will be available. Leave time to resolve any essential requirement before collection; it's harder to weigh an alternative when everyone is waiting to depart.

Use photos, records and a demonstration together

Recent front, side and rear photographs show shape, styling and presentation. They're useful when appearance matters for an occasion, but they can't prove build date, service history or every feature found on similar-looking cars.

Ask the provider to verify the relevant identity and dates from its records. You generally don't need a bundle of documents containing unrelated personal details. A clear answer to the question is more useful than records you can't interpret. If the model code is still unclear, ask someone who can identify the vehicle properly to explain it. A random online badge chart may leave the question unresolved.

Check the features you plan to use on the actual car while it's parked. Have the provider demonstrate the camera, seat mechanism or rear climate control. A brochure for a similar model doesn't establish what this one has, and a newer-looking dashboard can't prove that an assistance system is fitted and working.

Assess condition separately

Knowing the dates still won't tell you how the car presents today or how well your passengers fit inside. Record the agreed condition with the provider at handover and resolve concerns before leaving.

Test any essential comfort or access requirement directly. Being able to reach a seat or sit comfortably may make more difference to your journey than a styling update.

EliteMotion's J150 Prado listing group separates several listed configurations for an initial comparison. Those category names don't prove a particular manufacture year or confirm that a 250 is available.

Record what has been confirmed

Keep a short description with the booking: the generation, the meaning of the stated year, the proposed appearance and your essential features. Record whether the exact allocation is still pending.

You can review the wider fleet if another model suits the brief, or ask EliteMotion to clarify a listing before booking.
