Tsavo East or Tsavo West? Pick Your Park and Gate Before Booking the SUV

Choose between Tsavo East and Tsavo West before comparing SUVs. They have different landscapes, and your lodge's location can affect the drive as much as the park you select.

Start with what you want to spend time seeing. Then work out how you'll get from your starting point to the appropriate gate and lodge, and where you'll go after the stay.

Tsavo East: open country

The KWS description of Tsavo East lists semi-arid plains, acacia scrub, the Galana River and the Yatta Plateau. These may appeal if you enjoy broad landscapes and watching for wildlife across open country.

Ask prospective lodges which viewing areas you can visit at a comfortable pace from their location. Attractions within the same park can still be impractical to combine in one day, so check before adding every place you've read about to the route.

If you're travelling for photography, explain whether you'd like to spend a long time with one landscape or move between different scenes. That gives a guide or lodge more to work with than a request to "see everything".

Tsavo West: varied scenery

KWS's Tsavo West page describes Mzima Springs, the Shetani lava scenery and varied savannah landscapes. Consider West if those different settings interest your group.

Check which visits are practical from your accommodation. For any section on foot, ask how access is currently managed. Listing an attraction in the itinerary doesn't authorise you to leave the vehicle anywhere or follow an unofficial path.

Give the lodge your main priority and leave room for other visits if they fit. Trying to reach several different scenes on demand can leave everyone hungry or ready to go by the time you arrive.

Check the lodge location before committing

Once you've chosen a likely park, shortlist accommodation and request precise arrival instructions. Is the property inside the park, outside it or in another managed area? Which entrance should you use from your starting point?

Those answers will help you establish:

  • Where you'll complete admission formalities in relation to check-in
  • Whether an outing requires leaving and entering again
  • Where you can refuel or buy supplies before arrival
  • Which direction to take for onward travel
  • How much of arrival day will remain once you reach the lodge

Make sure the directions cover the journey you'll actually make. An approach recommended for a guest arriving from the coast may differ from the one you need from Nairobi.

Visiting both parks

Allow dedicated transfer time if you want to include East and West. Verify each park's arrangements separately; don't assume they share admission, interchangeable gates or a quick internal connection.

For each stay, write down the accommodation, intended entrance and exit direction, along with the full day you hope to spend in the park. Then plan the journey between them as a travel day in its own right.

If that leaves you arriving and immediately preparing to leave at both, consider a longer stay in one park. You'll have more time for the interests that prompted the trip.

Before paying, check current fees, ticket validity and re-entry rules with KWS or your booking provider. Details can change. Read the accommodation package carefully too, since some charges may be included and others payable separately.

Match the SUV to the itinerary

Send the hire provider the named park, lodge, access route and planned outings. EliteMotion's rental terms require an agreed route, with written approval for changes.

Compare the available SUV categories using your actual passenger and luggage requirements. Ask which vehicle will be allocated; a listing on a category page doesn't confirm a reservation.

A couple with camera bags will need a different cabin arrangement from a family filling every seat. Check how much boot space remains with all the seats you need upright. If the lodge includes guided outings, establish whether it provides a vehicle and where the rental car will stay during those trips.

Don't book on the assumption that the car can leave established roads. Route permission, current conditions and the driver's competence all affect where it can be used.

Include the journey after Tsavo

For a coast-bound trip, plan through to the entrance of your coastal accommodation. For a Nairobi return, include the agreed vehicle handback and any later commitments. The city name alone leaves out the final urban drive and any separate check-in process.

A departure-day game drive should remain optional. Check that it fits the verified gate and transfer arrangements without asking the driver to make up time afterwards.

If you're still choosing between the parks, contact EliteMotion with both complete routes. Request a proposal for each so you can compare the park, lodge and gate combinations on the same basis.
