How Big Are Lake Turkana and Turkana County? Compare Them With Familiar Kenyan Drives
Lake Turkana looks narrow on a map of Kenya. In person, even getting from one part of its shore to another takes planning. UNESCO measures it at 249 km from north to south and up to 44 km across. Its length is close to the road distance from Nairobi to Meru.
Turkana County is on another scale. The county government's investment portal gives its latitude range as about 1°30′ to 5°30′ north. That is four degrees, or roughly 440 km from south to north on a map. Compare that with the drive from Nairobi to Mombasa, which is about 485 km.

The Nairobi distances are rounded route estimates for Meru, Kisumu, and Mombasa and for Kisii. A different start point or route will change them. The lake and county figures measure geography, while the Nairobi figures follow roads. They help show the scale; they do not tell you how long it takes to travel in Turkana.
A lake about as long as the Meru drive
After driving about 225 km from Nairobi to Meru, you would still need another 24 km to match Lake Turkana's length. Kisii is roughly 330 km from Nairobi by road, about 80 km longer than the lake. Kisumu, at about 345 km, is nearly 100 km farther. The lake runs along Turkana's eastern side, with Marsabit on the opposite shore, as the county government notes. Visiting one stretch of shore gives you only a small part of it.
UNESCO calls Lake Turkana the world's largest desert lake. The length behind that description is easy to miss when you see it as a thin shape on a national map.
A county almost as long as the coast drive
At about 440 km from south to north, Turkana County's map span is around nine-tenths of the 485 km Nairobi to Mombasa road journey. The difference is roughly 45 km. That comparison says nothing about driving time: county boundaries do not form a route, and you may have a long drive before you reach the part of Turkana you want to visit.
The county's infrastructure information describes many dirt and gravel roads. For a trip there, choose a destination first, such as Lodwar or a lakeside town, and check the current route, road conditions, fuel stops, and local travel advice. Reaching Turkana County and reaching Lake Turkana can be two separate parts of the journey.
