The 2017 Prado VX-L and the 2017 Fortuner top diesel both use the same 2.8 L turbo engine and 6-speed auto, but they drive very differently: the Prado feels heavier, quieter and more cushioned on rough roads and offers full-time 4WD with extra off-road aids, while the Fortuner is lighter, firmer and more agile on tarmac, with part-time 4WD and a rear diff lock for off-road work; inside, the Prado is roomier with softer seats and more premium finishes, whereas the Fortuner is cozier with firmer seats and simpler trim but still well equipped.
